Vampire Lore Empty Vampire Lore

Post by Hello 4th August 2013, 9:33 pm

A vampire's heart does not beat. Their internal organs have long since atrophied into vestigial husks. They are not required to breathe or blink, but to keep up appearances it may be a good measure to take. They are able to spend some of their precious blood to give their normally cold skin the appearence and feel of warmth. Food is an abomination to these creatures. They may eat normally to keep up appearences, but the food will not sit long before it must be thrown up. Vampires, or kindreds as they call themselves, leave little behind when killed. Their body rapidly decomposes into ash after being killed. Some penitent vampires seem to make a living off of animal blood, but this does not really satisfy the hunger as much as the delicious taste of human blood. Most ancient vampires must hunt and kill others of their kind to noursh themselves- yet this is considered highly illegal in the vampire underground. A vampire's skin and appearance will look younger and very beautiful when he is well fed, and feeding gives them a sensation like none other. Drinking unclean blood will cause complications, and therefore most Kindred tend to pray on healthier humans.

Vampires drain their prey of blood through the use of retractable fangs, which will come out when the Kindred wills it, or when he sees the red liquid and is in need of feeding. At first, killing can be hard for a vampire, but in due time, most vampires will be forced to kill. Killing becomes easier and easier as the years pass, and a vampire kills over and over, and sees the people they once loved age and die. Human life, so short and cheap in comparison to a Kindred, become of less and less value until the mortal «herd» around her means no more to her than a swarm of annoying insects. Vampire elders are among the most jaded, unfeeling, paranoid beings the world has ever known.

A vampire will get extremely tired during the day, and they will feel compelled to sleep. Their skin naturally deforms without sleep for a long amount of time, and when a vampire sleeps, he does not merely go to sleep- he enters a deep slumber. They will regenerate all wounds while sleeping, but the amount of sleep required depends on the gravity of the wound. When they wake up, their skin will look ashen, and even though their blood pulsates -slower- when they asleep, it still runs out, and they will be weaker and incredibly hungry when they wake up.

Vampires value power, for its own sake, and for the security it brings - and they find it ridiculously easy to aquire mundane goods, riches and influence. A mesmerizing glance and a few words provide a cunning vampire with access to all the wealth, power and servants he could desire. This is not as easy as it sounds, however. The humans must be weak-minded, or at least interested in the vampire as a person. They will not be -forced- to do his bidding, but he has certain ways of making them feel compelled to doing so. Some powerful vampires are capable of implanting posthyptnotic suggestions or commands in mortals' minds, then causing the mortals to forget the vampire's presence. In this way, vampires can easily aquire legions of unwitting slaves. Powerful vampires in this context meaning elders of significant age, ranging from 600-800 years old, or even older.

The Embrace
In most cases, any future Kindred recieves their first drink of blood on the night one becomes a vampire. The process of turning is called «The Embrace» and has two distinct and rather intricate phases. The first is the simpler one of the two: The vampire who wishes to create a progeny drinks his victim- or rather, his intended «childe» near dry. This is no different from normal feeding, save that one does not need to worry about upholding the rules about remaining in the shadows and disposing the body afterward, and that one gets a very full meal indeed. The difference comes afterwards. Once the future childe has been almost completely depleted of blood, the «parent» vampire, known as the «sire» then returns some of his ill-gotten gains. He bites his lip, wrist or whatever and allows some of his blood to sink past his victim's lips. Assuming that the mortal does not try to resist the process- which is rather likely to fail, and assuming that the sire has not waited too long in granting his gift, the blood will revive the victim, albeit as a vampire.

The first few moments of ascending back into life- or the state of undead will be painful. That, and add on the incredible thirst fledglings (new vampires) feel as they wake up from the dead feel render them mindless, at least so it would seem. The sire usually does not give a lot of their own blood to their childe, and this results in the frenzy. Some sires will choose to abandon their childe right away, but this will usually not go well with the coven and the Prince of whichever city you're in. All vampires are bound by rules, and having frenzied vampires who would feast on everything that moves would also not be favourable. When that first thirst is upon you, you will do whatever you must to feed. You will kill your lover, your child, your parent or your priest to sate that thirst, and you'll be happy to do so- for as long as the frenzy lasts. No matter how long you're in that state of frenzy, no matter what triggered it – fear or hunger or pain or rage – no matter how long you give in to the animal inside you, you can't control what you do, and you always come down. And that's when you must deal with the consequences of what you did when that beast wearing your skin was in control. The first frenzy is never the last. Because of this, the childe better pray that their side has laid down some packs of blood, or even better- a live target. While so incredibly hungry, a vampire feels drained- above all things, and incredibly hungry. Weakened, but oh so hungry.

Reasons for Embrace
Some sires feel great remorse over their undying curse of vampirism, and select mortals who might "give something back" to the depraved race of Kindred. A few vampires look for great artists, thinkers, creators or just compassionate souls whose talents should be preserved forever. These Kindred often suffer greatly when they see what their selfishness weakes upon those brought into the fold, for the Embrace often destroys the spark of creativity. Kindred lack the ability to truly innovate - they ride human trends rather than set them, and even their most inspired works are nothing more than pale imitations of mortal work that has gone before. It is an irony that those Kindred who would preserve a childe's gift forever actually do more damage to their progeny's talent than simply allowing it to age naturally ever would. Other Kindred are vindictive and spiteful with the Embrace, choosing mortals whom they wish to see suffer. Some particularly cruel vampires delight in bringing the truly and pitiably insane into their ranks, hoping to glean some new insight from a fledgling's madness as she sinks into despair. Others might embrace in their degeneracy, sometimes selecting childer for the purpose of asserting their superiority over those who had been spoiled in life. However, most Kindred embrace out of loneliness or desire. These vampires are invariable the worst off as, after the culmination of their lust or anguish, they might be left not with soulmates, but with monsters every bit of callous and predatory as they are.

The Process Itself
Whatever course is taken, the childe then dies a mortal and spiritual death, only to ride unnaturally afterward. Most of the time, dying is a period of great pain and anguish; the childe suffers spasms and/or shock as her body sloughs off the mortal coil. The instant of rebirth, in contrast and comparison, is perhaps the greatest pleasure a Kindred may ever feel, and is likely one of the last true ecstasies a Kindred may ever feel. As the mystical process transforms the now-dead corpse of the childe, it evens out imperfections and often makes the body beautiful, albeit in a surreal manner. Such beauty is frightening to behold, a predatory grace like that of a shark or venomous snake. The childe's senses also hone to an uncanny level, revealing sounds she has never before heard of heeded, tactile stimuli never appreciated with the touch, and beaty and panoplies of color imperceptible to the human eye, and myriad individually distuinguishable smells. The vampire's sense of taste heightens as well, though toward a singe, terrible flavor. Only one substance satisfies the vampire: human blood. From the moment she rises, the vampire is a slave to the passion of her hunger, and every night from her Embrace to eternity, she will experience a starvation that can be sated only by preying 'pon members of her former species. After the Embrace, the child is known as a fledgling, under the protection and guidance of her sire until that sire deems her ready to face the night alone. It is the sire's responsibility to educate the childe in the ways of the Kindred, though such education is rarely formal, often spotty and always tasted by the sire's jealousies and prejudices. Many sires, desiring conspirates, sycophants or outright dupes, poison the minds of their childer against their enemies or intentionally leave out important bits of information, the better to rein in the childe later.

The First Nights
As the childe slowly enters the world of the Damned, she learns about the scoiety of the undead through her sire's tutelage and accumulated experience. Should the sire introduce her to other Kindred, the fledgling may gain firsthand knowledge of the pomp and ritual associated with the vampires' society. Most sires, however, sequester their childer from other Kindred, fearing that exposure to other vampires may sway their younglings' knowledge away from that which the sire wish them to learn. Many of the first nights are spent learning what it means to be undead. She might suffer blanks in which she goes into a frenzy- likely to happen if her blood supply is in short amount, and the master might offer her aid and guidance, or he may watch as it overtakes his childe and admonish her for weakness afterward. It is now that the childe learns that undeath is indeed a curse - despite the power brought by the Embrace. She is no longer entirely herself, and must forever be wary of the Hunger that burns inside her. Also, at this time, the childe learns - too late! - that is is harder for emotion to seep through. Many vampires compensate by making themselves feel more than they do, conjuring up memories of emotions long dead. Desperation is all that remains in the hearts of many vampires, as they realize what they have lost as their mortal selves died. The first nights are a time of bleak revelations. Many fledglings cannot cope with the terrible new world of night into which they have been reborn, and choose to meet the obliterating rays of the sun rather than continue their existence.

The Hunt
The most important lesson a newly Embraced Kindred learns is how to hunt for human prety. The sire inevitably takes an important role in this process, either instructing the childe in the art of feeding, or leaving her to her own devices and offering criticism afterwards. The malice in a Kindred's personality tends to come to the fore when instructing a childe how to hunt. Many vampires offer no "weaning period" to their childer, whereby the vampires may subsist on the blood of animals. In fact, many sires fail to inform their childer that animal blood may sustain a vampire. They turn the childer upon humankind immediately, forcing them to prey upon what they once were. A childe soon learns that the hunt is the crux of a vampire's existence. Of all the practices to which the sire introduces his childe, feeding is the only one absolutely mandatory to the existence of a vampire. Thus, many sires guide their childer into savoring the hunt, stoking their passions on their prey's terror or basking in the anticipation of a draught of blood even before it courses their lips.

The vampire's feeding engenders great ecstasy in the vessel, the person upon whom the vampire feeds. Needles to say, the Kindred feels physical bliss as well, as nourishing blood rushes in to fill the void in the vampire's soul and body. Kindred feed in numerous manners, as best benefits their personalities. Some Kindred prefer the brutality of feeding from whomever they choose, roughly handling their vessels and leaving them broken afterward. Others go to great lengths to increase the sensuality of the Kiss, concocting elaborate seductions and gathering veritable harems of mortal lovers from whom they can feed. Sill, other Kindred steal their prey's blood without their knowledge, feeding from the sleeping or the oblivious. Kindred also experience the aftereffects of drinking from vessels who have puculiarities of blood - the blood of an ill individual tastes poorly and may have an effect on the vampire, while a Kindred who feeds from a drunken or drugged vessel will feel as if herself is drunk or high. A few Kindred enjoy this vicarious debauchery, and select their vessels specifically for such intoxication. In the end, each vampire cultivates her own particular style and preferences when feeding. Kindred must however remember the rules of their coven- to preserve their shadow in this world when feeding. To this end, they typically lick the puncture wounds made by their fangs, magically sealing them shut and leaving no trace of their presence.

Havens
As a fledgling grows more and more knowledgeable in the ways of the Kindred, it must find its own haven. The childe's early nights are likely spent in the company of it's sire and the safety of his haven, the time inevitably- at least in most cases, comest o leave the nest. Selecting a haven is a very personal process, much as selecting a dwelling place of a mortal. A vampire must consider certain requirements when deciding upon his or her haven, however, that most mortals need not pay heed to. Obviously, the haven must be secure from the rays of the sun. A haven must also observe the nocturnal comings and going of the person in the apartment next door may prove bothersome. Finally, the haven should offer physical security during the daylight hours, vampires slumber unstirringly, and even should they manage to wake up, they will act sluggish and with great lethargy. Foes who find a vampire's lair have a great advantage on that particular Kindred. For these reasons, many vampires prefer inaccessible or highly guarded havens. Many vampires are also classy, and prefer the top class of everything, so these two points might clash for some. A few Kindred keep their homes from their past life as havens, while others choose locations where no one would even consider to look, to discourage unwelcome guests.

Society
Even though many Kindred prefer solitude, there are times that they are forced to interact with their kin, and the society of vampires is as structured as any mortal institution, if not even more so. A certain masquerade is neccesary for the vampires to be able to keep their secrets, and it's to enforce that that there exists overseers, or so-called Vampire Princes. In the olden days, the strongest vampire in each territory, which could include more than one city siezed control, or claimed domain over it, and used whatever means neccesary to keep his control over it. Any Prince is -not- to be underestimated as not only is he himself most likely incredibly strong, but he's also got a plethora of followers. A prince does not serve as a monarch, but rather an overseer or a magistrate. He is the judge who settles disputes between Kindred, and he is the ultimate authority on his set of rules for his given domain. The Kindred of his domain owes him no oaths of loyalty or vassalage, and their obedience to him depends on their cowardice, and most princes make certain to have a lot of muscles to keep his 'minions' obedient. The way to end a prince is to remove his enforcers, and when he no longer has any allies, his reign will end swiftly. However, the Prince is nothing to brush off. A prince wields vast amounts of power in order to maintain his or her position. They are the 'law', and they can easily make sure that any Kindred breaking his rules will meet a swift- or a long and torturing death.

The Six Rules of Burton City
Formed by the Prince Walther the Bavarian
The First Tradition
Thou shalt not reveal thy nature to those not of the Blood. Doing so shall renounce thy claims of Blood.

The Second Tradition
Thy domain is thy concern. All others owe thee respect while in it. None may challenge thy word in thy domain.

The Third Tradition
Thou shalt sire another only with permission of thine elder. If thou createst another without thine elder's leave, both thou and thy progeny shalt be slain.

The Fourth Tradition
Those thou create are thine own childer. Until thy progeny shall be released, thou shalt command them in all things. Their sins are thine to endure.

The Fifth Tradition
Honor one another's domain. When thou comest to a foreign city, thou shalt present thyself to the one who ruleth there. Without the word of acceptance, thou art nothing.

The Sixth Tradition
Thou art forbidden to destroy another of thy kind. The right of destruction belongeth only to thine elder. Only the eldest among thee shall call the blood hunt.

Vampire Lore Empty Re: Vampire Lore

Post by Hello 4th August 2013, 9:34 pm

My heart does not beat; the strength of my will alone suffices to force the blood through my body. My internal organs, by all accounts, have long since atrophied into vestigial husks, but that won't matter to a coroner, as once I am truly killed, I will rapidly decompose into dust. In the meantime, however, I'm not troubled by such trivial matters such as breathing, extremes of temperature and the like. My skin is cold, unless I take the effort to warm it. Doing so takes effort, though, and the expenditure of precioud blood. Regular food is an abomination unto me, and it doesn't sit for more than a few seconds in what remains of my stomach. Even with eternity stretching before me, my dear, I have better things to do with my plan than to crouch over toilets, heaving ashes and gobbets into the boul.

I save the niceties like warming my flesh and remembering to blink for company, such as yourself. Say thank you, dear. Keeping myself fresh and rosy-looking for you is costing me more than you know.

Returning to the drinking of blood- the defining act, as it were, of my state. Yes, I am afraid it is a necessity, though one can leave one's prey alive. All that requires is a little self-control and a touch of effort to close the wound. And no, we don't all drink from the neck. The problem with leaving one's prey alive, however, is that unless one has certain ... protections, she remembers. Such breaches of the Masquerade are not looked on kindly by the vampiric powers that be. Oftentimes, it makes more sense simply to kill.

My Drinking Problem
The crux of the matter, really, is that drinking blood not only allows me to perpetuate my existence, but it also provides a sensation unlike anything else this world has to offer. My dear, words can not describe it. Imagine drinking the finest champagne and the sensation of the most sensual lovemaking you've ever experienced. Overlay that with the rush the opium fiend feels as he takes that first breath on the pipe, and you begin to have some sense- some tiny, infinitesimal sense of what it feels like to drink the blood of a kine -- excuse me, a living human being.

The Embrace
In most cases, one receives one's first drink of blood on the night one becomes a vampire -- one of the "Kindred," as we like to call ourselves. The process is called "The Embrace" and has two distinct and rather difficult phases. The first is simple: The vampire who wishes to create a progeny drinks every last drop of blood he can from his intended "childe." This is no differenent from normal feeding, save that one doesn't need to worry about erasing the memory or disposing of the corpse afterward, and that one gets a very full meal indeed. The difference comes afterwards. Once the last bit of blood has pulsed its way out, the "parent" vampire - the technical term is "sire," not that you care yet - then returns some of his ill-gotten gains. He bites his lip, wrist, or whatever and allows some of his blood to pass his victim's lips. Assuming that the mortal does not actively and successfully resist the process - few do, believe me - and assuming that the sire has not delayed too long in granting this gift, then the blood trickles down the victim's throat, and revives her, albeit as a vampire.

(Getting fed on by a vampire is quite pleasurable for mortals, to the point of addiction for some - I was quite content to drift away. I remember distinctively thinking that my mother had been right after all, and that loose women would be the death of me, and I even recall laughing as my sire drank my life. And then, as I lay there, watching the shimmering door open before me, as my soul took its first faltering steps toward Heaven, she calmly slit her wrist and poured the vitriol of eternal life down my throat. You can mock me for not rejecting what she offered, but even in the face of Grace, life is sweet. Her blood seared as it trickled past my lips and down my throat, and I found myself wanting to live. The pain the blood brough was proof that I was alive. And when it became clear that I would not be ascending, the shining door vanished with a feeling of ineffable sadness, leaving me with my sire and a merderous hunger. Fortunately, my sire was kind enough to see me through the change; she'd seduced my best friend prior to stalking me, and I cached him in an adjoining room like a shrike stocking its larder. While I felt my body dying cell by cell, he lay senseless, waiting for my hunger. Ah, yes, the hunger of creation. That little bit of blood that one's sire uses to bestow the Embrace isn't much - a few drops with more mystical than nutritional significance. They certainly don't provide enough sustenance to satisfy the hunger of a newborn vampire. So the newborn childe had better pray her sire has laid in a few bottles or, better yet, a few bodies for the moment, so that there's something to feed on right after the change. I've witnesses the horror of newly Embraced Kindred giving in to that uncontrollable hunger and ripping to shreds whoever was nearest in their madness. When that first thirst is upon you, you will do whatever you must to feed. You will kill your lover, your child, your parent or your priest to sate that thirst, and you will be glad to do so - for as long as the frenzy lasts. There, my dear, is the rub. Because no matter how long you're in that state of frenzy, no matter what triggered it - fear or hunger or pain or rage - no matter how long you tigve in to the animal inside you, you can't contrl what you do and you always come down. And that's when you must deal with the consequences of what you did when that animal wearing your skin was in control. And the first frenzy is never the last. One would think it gets easier to deal with that loss of control as one grows more experienced. One who thought that would be quite wrong.

The beast will, in the end, win. If your will is strong, and you've got a decent sense of self, you can hold out for decades. Centuries, even. But you are never, ever free of the fear that the beast will one night triumph, and that fear is what the Beast will use to bring you to bay. Of course, the best way to fight the Beast is to keep oneself in fighting trim, and that means eating regularly. Then again, eating regularly usually means that sooner or later, you start killing kine - or mortals, and the more kine you kill, the easier the killing gets. So the Beast wins that way, as well. Even if you don't mean to, even if the process begins with an accident, sooner or later, you get inured to the sight of a brance-new corpse that you're responsible for, lying dead at your feet. After the tenth, hundreth, thousandth or whatever corpse, it stops being a person and becomes an object, a vessel. And you, at that moment, cease to be remotely human.

Drink a vampire's blood three times, and you're hopelessly enthralled with him. The resultant feeling of affection is called the blood bond, and if the vampire responsible for it reinforces it, the bond can last forever. After all, it's not like one can even die to escape it. Can you imagine that, by the way? Being forced to love someone forever? Knowing that the love you have for them - which is so strong you'll kill or die for this person - is a lie, a damnably induced lie? Hating them and loving them at the same time, and not even being able to do a damned thing about it?

Others might embrace in their degeneracy, sometimes selecting childer for the purpose of asserting their superiority over those who had been spoiled in life. However, most Kindred embrace out of loneliness or desire. These vampires are invariable the worst off as, after the culmination of their lust or anguish, they might be left not with soulmates, but with monsters every bit of callous and predatory as they are.

MYTHS
Vampires are burned by sunlight. True. Vampires must avoid the sun or die, though a few can bear sunlight's touch for a very short period of time. Vampires are nocturnal creatures, and most find it extremely difficult to remain awake during the day, even within sheltered areas.

Vampires are repulsed by garlic and running water. False. These are myths and nothing more.

Vampires are repulsed by crosses and other holy symbols. This is generally false. However, if the wielder of the symbol has great faith in the power it represents, a vampire may suffer ill effects from the brandishing of the symbol.

Vampires die from a stake through the heart. False. However, a wooden stake - or arrow, crossbow bolt and so on through their heart will paralyze the creature until it is removed.

Vampires have the strength of 10 men; they can command wolves and bats; they can hypnotize the living and heal even the most grievous wounds. True and false. The power of a vampire increases with age. Young, newly created vampires are often little more powerful than humans. But as a vampire grows in age and understanding, it learns to use her blood to evoke more powerful feats.

(A vampire is clinically dead - its heart does not beat, it does not breathe, its skin is cold and it does not age - and yet it thinks, and walks, and plans, and speaks... and hunts, and kills. To sustain its artificial immortality, the vampire must periodically consume blood, preferably human blood. Some penitent vampires eke out an excistence from animal blood, and some ancient vampires must hunt and kill others of their kind to nourish themselves, but most vampires indeed consume the blood of their former species. Vampires drain their prey of blood through the use of retractable fangs, which are magically gifted to vampires when they first become undead. Each vampire can also magically lick closed the wounds made by their fangs, thus concealing the evidence of their feeding. At first, relucatant to kill, the vampire is finally forced into murder by circumstance or need - and killing becomes easier as the years pass. Things only degenerate as the years turn to decades and then centuries, and the vampire kills over and over, and sees the people she loved age and die. Human life, so short and cheap in comparison to hers, become of less and less value, until the mortal "herd" around her means no more to her than a swarm of annoying insects. Vampire elders are among the most jaded, unfeeling, paranoid beings the world has ever known.

GHOULS
Can father children,
Not near as powerful as a vampire,
Can feel the sun on their shoulders,
Can drown,

ABILITIES

* Manipulation: By focusing the attraction of the Kindred's appearance, and using some blood points, the enacting Kindred can use this power to make him or her look stunning and impressive. It will snare weaker minded individuals with his/her actions, making the person seem much more compelling.

* Heightened Senses: Allows the vampire to spend blood in order to raise one of his/her five senses to superhuman levels.

* Scrawl: Hide messages in writing which only the intended reader and people that know the intender can read.

** Manipulation: By holding a target with your gaze, and using additional bloodpoints, the vampire can implant false thoughts or hypnotic suggestions in a target's mind.

** Anesthetic Touch: With a touch, the vampire may block their child's pain and send her into a slumber.

*** Recall: A childe can vanish into thin air and instantly move to their master, yet it costs plenty blood and struggle for them to do so.

*** Haven: The sire will use half of his bloodpool to recall himself to his safe haven. This will cause a lot of struggle for the Kindred, and he'll be more than compelled to lay down and slumber after using this ability.

*** Manipulation: By holding the target with the Kindred's gaze, the vampire will be able to make someone wander around in a daze. It uses blood as it's fuel, and will mostly affect weaker minded people.

*** Earth Meld : Allows the vampire to be absorbed by the earth, wherein he or she can rest undistrubed until the next night.

***/**** Imprint: Squeeze so hard you can leave imprints in solid steel.

**** Conceal: Hide an object independent of you up to the size of a house. This will consume more blood the bigger the object.

***** Tier of Souls: Gain memories or powers from the blood you drink.

The difficulty comes in the quality and nature of torporinduced
sleep. Being in torpor is akin to lying prostrate
through a decades-long waking dream. Visions, memories
and images of events past (and possibly even future) plague
the blood-addled mind of the torpid Kindred, and that’s
just a mild torpor experience. For some, torpor is a protracted
nightmare, fraught with horrific visitations of past
atrocities and failures. Imagine all the most intense qualities
of a powerful drug high, combined with the lucid displacement
of the deepest sleep, and the result is what every
passing hour of torpor is like. Now, try to imagine such
a mental state stretching on for 50 years. How about 100
years? The results can be harsh.

Poisons and Drugs
As undead, vampires have little fear of conventional poisons. However, they may succumb to poisons or drugs contained within the bloodstream of their victims. Indeed, certain vampires, known as "lushes" or "heads" actively seek out victims under the influence of alcohol or drugs, that they might receive a vicarious buzz.

Alcohol: The vampire gets an effect from drinking the blood of a person under the influence of alcohol. The alcohol will, however, naturally purge itself out of the bloodstream in due time.

Marijuana: The vampire experiences slightly altered perception of time, and they are less likely to frenzy in this state, due to the calming effect of the drug.

Hallucinogens: The vampire suffers from haunting visions- if the trip is sufficient.

Speed/Crack/Cocaine: Vampires will be more energetic, obviously, and they will have more difficulties resisting frenzy if that should occur.

Heroin/Morphine/Barbituarates: The vampire experiences a dreamlike state for the duration of the effect.

Salmonella (Food poisoning): The vampire becomes nauseated, unable to consume more blood, and suffers some health loss. The effects last about a day.

Poison: It will damage the vampire, but only a select few poisons actually have a real effect on the undead. Most inflict a fixed amount of damage before wearing off. The vampire may purge the blood at his normal expenditure rate, and effect heal automomatically within a few hours, or by sleeping.

Sunlight: Sunlight, even more than fire, is deadly to vampires. Even diffuse sunlight running through a heavy curtain can cause burns and direct sunlight sears all but the most powerful vampires. Vampires may try to soak the damage of the sun, and the difficulty to soak the damage depends on the intensity of the light, while the amount of damage taken depends on the amount of protection between the vampire's skin and the sunlight. No part of a vampire is immune to the rays of the sun. Any character looking into direct sunlight is blinded instantly, his or her ertinas burned by the illumination. Fortunately for vampires, the light reflected from the moon is not strong enough to inflict any damage, though some suffer the equivalent of mild sunburn if they are exposed to the light of a full moon and aren't wearing any protective gear.

Temperature Extremes: Vampires, being undead, suffer little from extreme temperatures. However, high (200 Fahrenheit+= temperatures might have the same effects as fire, but this is rare. Vampires suffering from extreme cold might be forced to spend blood on themselves, or they might suffer the effects of frostbite. In general, though, vampires should not suffer greatly from temperature fluctuations.

After the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the world seemed to turn over again, as if trying to reinvent itself. This time, it didn't do so well. Reconstruction was long and hard, even more for vampires than for mortals. For many elders, it meant actually seeing their world, their havens, their treasure lying in rubble. The old world literally had been ripped apart, and was being put back together, and for elder Kindred, it was a difficult time. A few simply couldn't handle seeing the destruction of their worlds, and chose to stay up to watch the sun rise.

The streets are rimed with patches of dirty gray ice, and a knife sharp December wind howls between the tall buildings. You keep to the shadows, stalking the alleys and the silent parking garages - anywhere that a lone mortal might stray. You force your lungs to draw in great gusts of air, wincing at the reek of car exhausts and rotting trash while you serach for the telltale hint of warm flesh and blood. Hunger sharpens your senses, narrowing your focus to one single set of impressions - the sight, sound and smell of your prey. Suddenly, you hear the hollow echo of footsteps, a single pair of feet crossing the concrete floor of a garage. The Hunger claws at you as you start to run.

A Beast I am, lest a Beast I become.

WORDS COMMONLY USEZ

This is a list of terms commonly used in the World of Darkness. If you are unfamiliar with the game, this is your opportunity to gain an understanding of the language that is used.

Ancilla: (plural: ancillae) A vampire not young enough to be considered a neonate yet not old enough to be considered an elder. Usually around 100-200 years old and of the 10th to 9th generation.

Amaranth: An archaic term for diablerie.

Blood Bond: A mystical emotional bond created by drinking a vampire's blood on three separate occasions. It creates a strong feeling of love and devotion in the drinker (referred to as the thrall) for the one whose blood he/she drank (referred to as the regnant).

Caine: According to legend, the first vampire, cursed by God for the murder of his brother Abel.

Cainite: Another name for vampire kind. Preferred by the Sabbat to the term Kindred.

Childe: (plural: childer) The offspring of a vampire created through the Embrace.

Example: Adam, by turning Bob into a vampire, has made him into his Childe.

Clan: A group of vampires all descended from the same antediluvian, who generally share similar characteristics and powers.

Diablerie: The act of killing another vampire by drinking out their soul along with their blood, and subsuming it into oneself. It is considered a heinous and loathsome act by most, although it does have the potential to lower one's generation.

Elder: One of the oldest vampires, generally possessing great status and power. Usually over 300 years old and of the 8th generation or lower.

Embrace: The act of turning a mortal into a vampire. This is accomplished by draining all blood from the mortal host and then forcing them to swallow a few drops of your own vitae.

Frenzy: What occurs when the beast takes over in anger and a vampire flies into a fit of unreasoned violence.

Generation: A term describing how far removed from Caine a vampire is. It totals the number of embraces between Caine and the vampire in question, plus one.

Example: Caine's Childe would be of the 2nd generation (1 embrace + 1). That Childe's Childe would be of the 3rd (2 embraces +1).

Ghoul: A semi-mortal servant created by regularly feeding a human vampiric blood. In this condition, the mortal stops aging and might gain limited supernatural powers.

Haven: A safe place where a vampire regularly sleeps during the day.

Jyhad: A term for the general machinations of the elders and (at the highest level) antediluvians which involve the elaborate manipulation of their descendents. It also may refer to the war between the sects.

Kindred: Another name for vampire kind. Generally used by the Camarilla.

Kuei-jin: The mysterious Kindred of the East, or hungry dead. They operate differently from the Western Kindred, and do not claim lineage from Caine.

Lupine: A term many vampires use to refer to werewolves, one of their oldest and most feared enemies. Werewolves, on the other hand, refer to themselves as Garou.

Neonate: One of the younger members of vampire society, who generally have little political sway or power. Usually less than 100 years old and of the 13th to 11th generation.

Regnant: The dominant half of a blood bond who has had another imbibe their blood.

Rotschrek: What occurs when the beast takes over in fear and a vampire flies into a fit of unreasoned panic, trying to escape their surroundings at all costs.

Sire: A relational term, referring to a vampire that has embraced somebody.

Example: Carl, by turning Dave into a vampire, has become his Sire.

Sword of Caine: Another name for the Sabbat.

Thrall: The submissive half of a blood bond who has imbibed a vampire's blood.

Vaulderie: A Sabbat ritual in which everybody present places some amount of blood (which may vary depending on their status) into a chalice and later sips from it. It creates the vinculum.

Vinculum: The result of the Vaulderie which acts similarly to a blood bond, except that it is unbreakable and has many varying degrees of affection which it produces.

Vitae: Blood.
